The Production Assistant: Important support for the production management

Film and television productions are complex and varied projects in which organisation, coordination and, last but not least, costing are important factors. The artistic aspect does not play the main role in the economic and organizational focus. The responsibility for a production lies in the hands of the production manager, who is actively supported by a production assistant. However, the definition of the production assistant is not uniform in all production companies, which can often lead to irritations. Further deviations can also be found in the English language, especially for US productions.

While in some independent companies the production secretary is referred to as the production assistant, in other companies - including public broadcasters - the production assistant reports directly to the production manager and takes over some of his tasks, such as calculation and coordination. With the appropriate experience, a production assistant often carries out smaller film and television projects on his own.

The area of responsibility also depends on the scope of the project, the size of the team and the genre. When looking for a job, applicants should therefore not primarily focus on the job description, but should take a closer look at the actual tasks in order to get an impression of the field of activity. In addition to enthusiasm for the film industry, good commercial and calculatory knowledge as well as sound legal (basic) knowledge in the areas of contract and labour law are important prerequisites.

Knowledge of English, computer skills, typing and a driving licence are nowadays mostly indispensable, further foreign language skills are helpful depending on the project. Since the film business is often hectic, high resilience and a cool head in stressful situations are indispensable. There are different ways to start your career, ranging from internships to traineeships and trainee programs.

friendz GmbH supports the production assistant not only during production on the set, but also in obtaining official permits, filming permits or location scouting.

Frankfurt: Mainhattan as a film city

Frankfurt is lively and active in many areas of life and the economy. In the fields of art and culture, film has become indispensable in Frankfurt. The German Film Institute (DIF) was founded here back in 1949 and is now the oldest German film science institute. Since 2006, the DIF has also run the German Film Museum, one of Germany's most important cultural institutions. At Frankfurt's Goethe University, the Institute for Theatre, Film and Media Studies is also engaged in teaching and research, including film and media presentation. For film fans and cineasts, not only multiplex cinemas provide the best entertainment, but also numerous cinemas that convince with their sophisticated and varied cinema programmes.

One of the most coveted film prizes is the Hessische Film- und Kinopreis, which is awarded every year at the Alte Oper Frankfurt by the Hessian Ministry of Science and the Arts together with the Hessian Film Fund as part of the Frankfurt Book Fair. The prizes in the various categories are endowed with a total of 185,000 euros. In addition, the unendowed Hessische Fernsehpreis has been awarded since 2007.

But Frankfurt is not only a city in which film and cinema are viewed from a scientific or cultural perspective, it is also where film takes place. The Main metropolis is the scene for film and television almost every day. Whether it's a feature film, series or commercial, Frankfurt is the place for filming everywhere. To ensure that the filming process runs smoothly, permission must be obtained in any case before filming begins. This is particularly important for filming in public places, pedestrian zones or other public traffic areas.

The team of friendz GmbH supports international filmmakers not only during the production in Frankfurt on set, but also in obtaining official permits, filming permits or location scouting. We have the know-how and the necessary contacts.

Because the heart beats for film in Frankfurt and the metropolis with its convenient location in the heart of Germany and Europe is a popular film location, numerous companies from the film industry and corresponding service providers have also settled here. From animation studios and film technology to sound and audio production, everything the filmmaker's heart desires is represented here. These advantages are certainly also the reasons why successful production has been and continues to be realised in Frankfurt. Whether classics like "Ein Fall für zwei" and "Tatort", but also "Die Kommissarin", "Das Mädchen Rosemarie" as well as "Bandits" and "Schneewittchen muss sterben" were staged in Frankfurt.

The film production: In four steps to the finished film

From the idea to the finished film it is a long and labour-intensive way for all involved. Whether it's a cinema, television or advertising film, the process is similar for all film productions. First of all, the artistic and economic/organizational areas must be distinguished. The artistic area, for which the director of a film production is responsible, includes not only the director himself but also the camera, set design, make-up and costume. The organisational and economic area includes, for example, production management, film management, production management and production management. The producer is responsible for him. In order for the film project to succeed, direction and production must work closely together.

The film production itself is divided into different phases. Development and financing are followed by pre-production, which includes location scouting, putting together the film team and casting the actors. After the pre-production the shooting takes place. The resulting material is then used in post-production, i.e. post-production, to produce the finished film.

Before the shooting can begin, appropriate locations have to be found, because not all shots can and should be made in the film studio. If outdoor shots are required, location scouts usually come into play. They are given artistic guidelines by the director and set designer, which have to be taken into account when looking for a location. Before they suggest a location for the shoot, they clarify the infrastructure and other special features and make a preliminary request for the filming permit. Only when all the information is available does the location scout propose the selected location to the director. If the location scout agrees, the film is forwarded to the production manager, who then organizes the shooting on location.

The shooting itself takes place in the studio and at the original locations according to a previously defined shooting schedule. This is determined by the production logistics and does not correspond to the actual sequence of the later film scenes. In addition to the shooting period, the shooting schedule also specifies the number of shooting days required. It also takes into account when motifs (i.e. locations), actors, any animals required, extras and special effects are available. The shooting takes place at the previously determined locations and the selected motifs. A 90-minute film is shot on 20 to 40 different motifs. If the entire crew is on site with the required equipment, there is no longer talk of a motif, but of a film set or short set.

We, the team of friendz GmbH support filmmakers not only during the production on the set, but also support you in obtaining official permits, filming permits or location scouting.

Film Blocker: Order and undisturbed shooting on the film set

Outside shots are always a very special challenge for everyone involved in film shooting. Not only the weather influences whether the shooting schedule can be adhered to, but also the individual environment. Residents, parked or moving cars, ambulances and fire brigades and of course fans and the press can cause disruptions and unpleasant disturbances on the set. To ensure that everything runs as smoothly as possible, blockers are essential when shooting outside. They are always the first people on the film set to ensure that disturbingly parked cars are moved or removed, that roads are closed, that fans and unannounced journalists and onlookers do not gain access to the film set and, finally, that no residents or pedestrians walk through the picture.

At the same time, film blockers also act as mediators, as it is not uncommon for residents, passers-by or motorists to feel hindered by the shooting. Whether it's the parcel service that has to deliver an urgent shipment, the taxi driver who wants to bring a passenger home, or the local resident who can't park his car in the traditional parking lot right outside the front door, there are always situations in which people get angry. This calls for the blocker's knowledge of human nature and sure instinct. Now it is a matter of calming heated minds, explaining the situation, asking for understanding and, if necessary, pointing out alternatives. If, on the other hand, an ambulance, police or fire brigade have to pass through the restricted area, it is the blocker's job to inform the film team as early as possible so that the passage can be cleared.

Many blockers have security experience and therefore have good prerequisites for working on the film set. Important characteristics are also good organizational skills and a pronounced ability to communicate, as well as experience in applying de-escalation and stress avoidance strategies sensibly.

The term "blocker" is derived from the English "to block", which means "to block" or "to block". In football, too, there are blockers that prevent the opposing team from moving forward by blocking.
